Moldovița Monastery, code SV-II-a-A-05673, currently a nunnery. Monument of international importance included in the UNESCO patrimony in 1993, located in Vatra Moldoviței commune (22 km distance from Câmpulung Moldovenesc, 31 km from Gura Humorului, 65 km from Suceava).
Founded in 1532 by Prince Petru Rareș (1527-1538; 1541-1546), the natural son of Stephen the Great, the Moldovița monastery has a trefoil plan (triconch).
Moldovița’s interior and exterior painting moves away from the hieraticism of 15th-century Byzantine painting, presenting a series of realistic elements.
The nave scene of the crucifixion of Jesus is considered the most valuable among the churches in Bukovina, specialists finding analogies with both the Italian Renaissance art and the art of Russian iconographers in Novgorod in the fifteenth century.
According to specialists, the composition of the Jesse’s tree from the monasteries of Moldovița and Humor influenced the similar composition from the monasteries of the Great Lavra and Dochiaru from Mount Athos.
