The ethnographic museum in Vatra Dornei, a monument of the public forum, of county importance, inaugurated in 1897, is located in Vatra Dornei, Mihai Eminescu Street, no. 17. It currently operates on the ground floor of the town hall building in Vatra Dornei.
The 1,800 pieces are exhibited in nine rooms, each illustrating various aspects of popular culture: architecture, ceramics, household objects, textiles, pieces of furniture, pastoral inventory, rafting, etc.
From an ethnographic point of view, particular importance is presented by three rooms, in which the oven, the fireplace and the instruments specific to a Bukovina peasant household, from the beginning of the 20th century, were reconstructed.
The most important pieces on display in this museum are, in the opinion of specialists, the following:
1. the old costume pieces of the Hutsul women from Izvoarele Sucevei, considered unique in Romania;
2. the model of the traditional peasant house from Cosna locality;
3. hatchets, made as accessories for men’s folk costumes, not as weapons or tools;
4. the collection of the 300 decorated eggs representing all the ethnographic areas of Bukovina.
