The National Museum of Bukovina, code SV-II-m-B-05480. Public forum monument of international importance located in Suceava, Ștefan cel Mare Street, no. 33.
The museum was built between 1902 and 1903 in simple Baroque style, going to house mainly the artefacts discovered, starting with 1895, by the Viennese architect Karl Adolf Romstorfer (1854-1916) at Suceava Citadel.
The permanent exhibition is presented in 27 rooms. Organized on a chronological principle, it begins with the Lower Palaeolithic era (artefacts from Ripiceni, Botoșani County), ending with images from the anti-communist demonstrations in December 1989, in Suceava. Most of the exhibits are archae-ological (rooms 1-15), illustrating all the historical epochs up to feudalism. Impressive are the ceramics and Neolithic artefacts, specific to the Cucuteni-Trypillia culture, whose distribution area included historical Bukovina (Suceava County in Romania and the Chernivtsi region in Ukraine).
The most spectacular exhibits are coins, ornaments, medieval fabrics and weapons (mainly swords), objects and images from the time of Austrian Bukovina or those from the era of “real socialism”. Impressive portraits of Nicolae Ceausescu and the reconstitution of a grocery store, with a line of citizens queuing to buy the famous “sneakers” (the lower part of the pig’s legs, in the slang of the time).
In the “Hall of the Royal Council” is put in scene, with mannequins dressed in period costumes and audio recordings, a symbolic scene in which Stephen the Great receives the messengers (ambassadors) of six states: Wallachia, Poland, Hungary, Venice, Kyiv Russia and the Ottoman Empire.
The National Museum of Bukovina organizes, starting with 2006, the most important festival of medieval art in Romania (Ștefan cel Mare festival, the 13th edition in 2019). Guests from Romania, Serbia, Turkey, Ukraine, Hungary, the Republic of Moldova participate in this festival, which takes place annually in August at the Suceava Citadel. There are presented, among others, fighting shows, horseback riding, archery, music and medieval gastronomy workshops, etc.
In August, in the Citadel of Suceava, the National Museum of Bukovina also prepares the rock music festival “Bucovina Rock Castle” (the 10th edition, August 2020), which already has an international dimension and is another source of tourist attraction.
